About Keyin.io
Keyin.io is a free, minimal typing practice site. Type the most common English words or passages from classic books, and watch your speed and accuracy as you go. There's no sign-up and nothing to install: open the page and start typing.
Getting started
- Pick a mode above the passage: words or quotes.
- Start typing. The grey text turns dark as you type it correctly, and mistakes show in red.
- Finish the passage to see your results, then go again.
Keyin needs a physical keyboard. On a phone or tablet, connect a keyboard first; the page doesn't open an on-screen one.
Practice modes
- Words
- A random run of very common English words, in lengths of 10, 25, 50 or 100 words. Good for warming up and for building speed on the words you type most. To focus on just the top 100, 200 or 500 words, use the common words page.
- Quotes
- Paragraphs from public-domain classics on Project Gutenberg, with punctuation and capital letters, like real writing. Each passage shows its book and author. Every passage comes up once before any repeat. To practice with just one of them, pick it from the book list.
Your chosen mode and length are remembered in this browser.
Keyboard shortcuts
| Any key | Start typing; the timer starts on your first keystroke |
| Backspace | Go back and fix a mistake |
| Esc | Skip to a new passage |
| Enter or Esc | After finishing: next passage |
| R | After finishing: try the same passage again |
How your results are measured
- WPM (words per minute) counts every 5 correctly typed characters, spaces included, as one word. That's the standard measure, so long and short words count fairly.
- Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were correct.
- The timer starts on your first keystroke, so take your time to read before you begin.
Both numbers update live as you type, and the results card adds your time and characters typed.
Settings
Open settings in the top right to change:
- Theme: light, dark, or follow your system.
- Key sounds: mechanical, soft, a real 1960s typewriter, or off.
Settings save automatically in this browser.
Tips
- Aim for accuracy first. Speed follows once your fingers stop correcting mistakes.
- Keep your eyes on the text, not the keyboard.
- Short, regular sessions beat one long one.
Privacy
There are no accounts. Your typing never leaves your device, and your settings are stored only in your own browser. Keyin.io uses Google Analytics to count visits and may show ads from Google, both of which use cookies. See the privacy policy for details and how to opt out.
Support
Keyin.io is free, supported by ads and donations. If you enjoy it, you can buy me a coffee to help keep it running.
